Yeah, we’ve been hearing this sound from Chaka Khan, representing the funky soul side of the sound to Norman Connors and vocalist Jean Carn playing their unique brand of multi-cultural, freedom jazz. For those opening your ears for the first time in the 1990’s, there was the Brand New Heavies, whose live action British-born acid jazz (the funk breaks from ’60’s and ’70’s artists like Horace Silver, drummer Idris Muhammad, and electric saxophonist Eddie Harris) injected a hip hop flava, which was the main seasoning on the neo funk and soul souffle of that time.

“At the Jazz Band Ball” Sidney Bechet’s Bluenote Jazzmen Recorded 1949 for Bluenote 561 First introduced by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1918, written by Larry Shields and Nick LaRocca. Sidney Bechet was born in New Orleans in 1897 and was a child prodigy on the clarient and soon surpassed his teachers and even as a child, he was playing with some of the top bands in New Orleans. At the age of 20, he arrived in Chicago and played with King Oliver and in 1919 he was touring Europe where he was a great sensation. It was in London that he bought his first soprano saxophone. Back in the United States, he began his recording career and worked with Clarence Williams, Louis Armstrong, Nobel Sissel, and even had a short stint with Duke Ellington. It was in Europe that he achieved his greatest success and where eventually made his home, but he never forgot the New Orleans tradition that nurtured and inspired him. Bechet died in Paris, France, on his 62nd birthday, May 14, 1959.

MINA SAMBINHA samba latin Jazz Guitar – Godin xtSA Mina Sambinha is a song I wrote inspired by brazilian music and accordion/bandoneon, specially the superb french player Marc Berthoumieux. This time I play with MIDI guitar. Jazz Guitar I have a broad of influences toward Jazz Guitar. Brazilian music specially is a endless source of inspiration. I was particularly touched for this tune creation by talents, music and human spirit of artists like Ivan Lins and his extraordinary band (have to listen Leonardo Amuedo!) and Joao Bosco also with a incredible staff of band-mates and guest musicians like Gonzalo Rubalcaba in Incompatibilidade De Genios. And of course…Tom Jobim, always present and alive forever! Technical stuff I did play a Godin xtSA blending the electric guitar pickups with a bit of piezo acoustic spice, there is too the midi guitar synth controlling a french accordion sound from RS5 keyboard via Roland Gi-20 Midi converter. Pure MIDI guitar..! I composed and recorded this song with the help of amazing program Band in Box 2008 – www.pgmusic.com – including live “on the fly” electric and Midi guitar performance direct to the stereo audio track available in Band in a Box.. not overdubs or edits..it was HARD!! because, beside the playing itself, there are real time switching between electric, acoustic and midi, I got a decent version after 3 or 4 attempts. Band in a Box is, to me, a invaluable practicing, composing/arranger assistant tool for musicians, song …

When ASCAP (American Society of Composers and Publishers) raised its licensing fees for broadcast use, many ASCAP members, including Ellington, could no longer play their compositions over radio, as most music was played live on radio in those days. Ellington turned to Billy Strayhorn and son Mercer Ellington, who were registered with ASCAP competitor BMI to “write a whole new book for the band,” Mercer recalled.” ‘A’ Train” was one of many songs written by Strayhorn, and was picked to replace “Sepia Panorama” and the band’s signature song. Mercer recalled that he found the song in a trash can after Strayhorn discarded because it sounded too much like a Fletcher Henderson arrangement. The song was first recorded on January 15, 1941 as a standard transcription for radio broadcast. The first (and most famous) commercial …
