Senor Blues Silver Horace 1959 In the fifties and sixties the Netherlands as well as the Scandinavian countries had an enormous attraction for American jazz musicians. It appeared that they were much more appreciated and also, there were no racial barriers for so many to overcome in their homeland. We see here a clip with the Horace Silver Quintet in 1959 recorded, in what looks to me the Singer Theatre in Laren, about 15 minutes on a bicycle from my home in Bussum. In 1951, Horace Silver (born in 1929) moved to New York City where he accompanied saxophonists Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and many other legends. In the following year, he met the executives at Blue Note while working as a sideman for saxophonist Lou Donaldson. This meeting led to Silver signing with the label where he would remain until 1980. He also collaborated with Art Blakey in forming the Jazz Messengers during the early 1950s (which Blakey would continue to lead after Silver formed his own quintet in 1956). During these years, Silver helped create the rhythmically forceful branch of jazz known as “hard bop” He based much of his own writing on blues and gospel—the latter is particularly prominent on one of his biggest tunes, “The Preacher.” While his compositions at this time featured surprising tempo shifts and a range of melodic ideas, they immediately caught the attention of a wide audience. Silver’s own piano playing easily shifted from aggressively percussive to lushly romantic within just a …

One O’Clock Jump Price Sammy Septet 1959 An amazing recording of several of my favourite jazz musicians. In 1977 I had a chance to play for two weeks next to Doc Cheatham, who came to Toronto as a featured guest of our Climax Jazz Band. It was such a surprise to find this tune with Doc with an all American All Star Band playing in the Netherlands in 1959 for the VPRO Broadcasting Company. Doc would play his horn high up in the air. He told me it was to keep sufficient air reserve in his lungs and he considered it a healthy position as well. A wonderful team of musicians is surrounding Doc. Pianist and leader Sammy Price sets the intro and after a few chorusses the band jumps onto One O’Clock Jump. On alto sax we hear Eddie Barefield, trombonists Elmer Crumley and another one of my favourites, JC Higgimbotham. In the rhythm group no other than JC Heard on drums with Jimmy Lewis on bass.

Hucko clarinet, Randy Sandke trumpet, Dan Barrett trombone, Johnny Varro piano, Colin Gieg bass and Jake Hanna drums. A very relaxed and swinging band of American All Stars on tour through Europe in 1987 play a live concert for German TV featuring some of the tunes of Armstrong and Goodman Peanuts Hucko (1912-2003) was born Michael Andrew Hucko. The swing clarinettist’s lifelong nickname stemmed from his childhood love of peanuts. In 1939 Hucko came to New York City, where he began playing tenor sax with the bands of Will Bradley, Joe Marsala, Bob Chester and Charlie Spivak. He served in Europe with Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band until the leader’s disappearance in 1944. After Hucko began concentrating solely on clarinet he was featured in the trombonist’s Dixieland combo, the Uptown Hall Gang. Fats Waller’s hot-and-heavy “Stealin’ Apples” became Hucko’s signature tune, remaining in his repertoire from then on. Following the war, Hucko did studio work for ABC and CBS while making the rounds of major jazz bands: Benny Goodman, Eddie Condon, Ray McKinley, Earl Hines, Jack Teagarden, the Louis Armstrong All-Stars. The clarinetist led his own combo at Condon’s club in the mid-60s, then joined what evolved into The World’s Greatest Jazz Band for annual gigs at Dick Gibson’s Colorado Jazz Party. Hucko fell in love with Denver, opening his Navarre nightclub there in 1974. The club’s …

MINA SAMBINHA samba latin Jazz Guitar – Godin xtSA Mina Sambinha is a song I wrote inspired by brazilian music and accordion/bandoneon, specially the superb french player Marc Berthoumieux. This time I play with MIDI guitar. Jazz Guitar I have a broad of influences toward Jazz Guitar. Brazilian music specially is a endless source of inspiration. I was particularly touched for this tune creation by talents, music and human spirit of artists like Ivan Lins and his extraordinary band (have to listen Leonardo Amuedo!) and Joao Bosco also with a incredible staff of band-mates and guest musicians like Gonzalo Rubalcaba in Incompatibilidade De Genios. And of course…Tom Jobim, always present and alive forever! Technical stuff I did play a Godin xtSA blending the electric guitar pickups with a bit of piezo acoustic spice, there is too the midi guitar synth controlling a french accordion sound from RS5 keyboard via Roland Gi-20 Midi converter. Pure MIDI guitar..! I composed and recorded this song with the help of amazing program Band in Box 2008 – www.pgmusic.com – including live “on the fly” electric and Midi guitar performance direct to the stereo audio track available in Band in a Box.. not overdubs or edits..it was HARD!! because, beside the playing itself, there are real time switching between electric, acoustic and midi, I got a decent version after 3 or 4 attempts. Band in a Box is, to me, a invaluable practicing, composing/arranger assistant tool for musicians, song …
